Wisconsin Couple Plans to Bicycle to 72 Counties in 72 Days, Visiting Restaurants in Every County
On July 9, 2015, Ray and Jo Resch of Madison, Wisconsin will embark on a bicycle journey that will take them to all 72 counties in Wisconsin. The trip is estimated to take over two months to complete, but the Reschs have a goal of completing the journey in 72 days. The trip is appropriately named 72 Counties in 72 Days and will entail riding approximately 3,000 miles.
For the trip, the Reschs will ride Trek 7300 hybrid-style bicycles manufactured by the Wisconsin company. This style of bike will allow for comfortable riding on both paved and un-paved roads throughout the 3,000 miles. The pace of the ride is slated for 9 to 10 mph to allow the couple to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
While their needed supplies will be packed right on the bicycles, Ray and Jo Resch will also enjoy stops at restaurant around Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Restaurant Association has donated gift certificate dining dollars to use while eating at member establishments along their journey. Culver’s Franchising System, Inc. has also donated several gift coupons for value basket meals and frozen custard.
With safety being a top concern, the couple is working with the Wisconsin Counties Association and notifying each County Sheriff’s office of their estimated arrival, in case they run into an emergency situation. The couple plans to stay overnight with friends and family for much of the journey, but will also take advantage of the non-profit organization WarmShowers, a free worldwide hospitality exchange for touring bicyclists, and the occasional hotel stay.
The Reschs are semi-retired and routinely ride about 3,000-4,000 miles per year on their bicycles. In recent years, they have completed many self-supported bicycle tours but none have been as extensive as the 72 Counties in 72 Days tour. Past tours they’ve completed include crossing Wisconsin from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan and traveling from Madison to Washington Island, Wisconsin.
