DHS Merger – Change in Food Safety Licensing
July 1st the food safety and recreational licensing at DHS will move to DATCP.

Starting July 1st, the food safety and recreational licensing group at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) will move to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). This change will consolidate food safety regulation into one state-level agency.

Here is a summary from DATCP on how this change will affect foodservice establishments:

Some things won’t change…

  • Your license fee is staying the same
  • Your license renewal will still have the same due date – visit DATCP’s website to see a sample of the new license
  • You still have the same choice of payment options, including online payment
  • Payment of your license will be made to DHS

Some things will change for the better…

  • Diversified businesses will be less likely to require licensing and inspection from two separate state agencies
  • Your questions will be answered by DATCP without multiple telephone calls to different agencies

And some things will just have to change…

Timeline for the transition

  • Renewals mailed during the week of May 9
  • Renewals returned to DATCP by June 30 (to avoid late fee)
  • Existing permits expire on June 30
  • Late fees are assessed for renewals not returned by July 1
  • DHS-Food Safety and Recreational Licensing and DATCP merger becomes official on July 1

NOTE: This change only impacts foodservice establishments who currently are inspected by the State of Wisconsin.  If your business is licensed and inspected by a local or county health department, your fees and license will not change.
