GOP Solidifies Control of Wisconsin Government;
Dems Reassert Power in Statewide Races

President Barack Obama won Wisconsin last night and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin defeated former Governor Tommy Thompson for U.S.Senate by a surprising margin of 51-46 percent, as Democrats reasserted their dominance in statewide races.

State Government
However, in an election night with headlines favoring Democrats, there was also plenty of good news for Wisconsin Republicans. Republicans dominated state elections all across the state, regaining control of the state Senate by taking two seats from the Democrats, and expanding their majority in the state Assembly. Republicans will control the state Senate by an 18-15 margin, and the Assembly with a high-watermark 60-39 majority.

These developments give Republicans full working control of state government for the next two years (barring additional recall or special elections in the state Senate). They also give Republicans sole responsibility for getting something done to improve Wisconsin’s business climate relative to other states, and prepare our state to take advantage of an economic recovery. GOP lawmakers are going to be expected to help deliver the new jobs promised by Governor Scott Walker when he was elected in 2010.

Congressional Delegation
Following this high-turnout presidential election, it is clear that Republicans have solidified control of their 5 seats in Congress and Democrats have solidified control of their 3 seats. There were no close races, with all incumbents winning by margins of 12 points or more. Rep. Paul Ryan won reelection to his congressional seat despite losing his bid to become Vice President as Mitt Romney’s running mate.

Wisconsin will continue to be represented by one Democrat and one Republican in the U.S. Senate, with Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Madison) succeeding Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Milwaukee). Senator Ron Johnson (R-Oshkosh) is not up for election until 2016 – the next presidential election year. Democrats could take a strong run at Johnson in 2016, based on the numbers they achieved yesterday.
